Responsibilities:
Will perform engineering work and calculations related to protection of the T&D System with strong knowledge in system protection and power quality - will work closely with other groups
Performs investigative work relating to the technical areas of power quality and will make recommendations on new technologies and work collaboratively to come up with new ideas
Candidate should be comfortable using computer technology for studies: loss evaluation, fault studies, power quality, and coordination
Will develop drawings for control system connections, substation physical layout, as well as the ideal locations for substations, focusing on power quality
Will assist Engineering Team in providing protective relay settings for T&D substations, and will also modify - as needed - other substations in order to maintain the best possible sys. Protection
Will assist with bidding and associated documentation to identify best bidders for substation eqpt.; will work with suppliers and monitor/ measure their performance ensuring schedule is met
Prepares cost estimates on certain projects, coordinates field testing, and will perform other functions related to substation control systems such as phasing testing
Work collaboratively in the preparation of transmission sys. work plans; will monitor progress, when needed, and make any corrective action when deemed necessary.
Works with Junior-Engineers/ Co-Op students to develop their engineering acumen - will provide regular reports and updates on project status, and will think in terms of both long-term and short-term for planning purposes to meet company goals and objectives in a cost-effective manner.
Will develop work plans, as well as manage them, taking any corrective action as required - will work with the Supervisor and/or Dept. Manager to identify or inform of any changes in project
Should be aware of, and have knowledge of, RUS procedures and codes (IEEE, NEMA, NEC, NESC, ANSI, etc), as well as their specs and other standards.
Keep manager updates on relevant parts of projects, develop reports, and be aware of industry changes - will also manage multiple projects, often with limited supervision.
Must be able to work with other departments/ staff, and work together to carry out projects/ plans
Collaborates on the preparation of work plans and monitors actual progress of applicable portions, taking any corrective action required
Organizes and sponsors training sessions and seminars for Engineer Technicians, construction crews, and other Engineers
Prepares work order estimates, cost estimates, construction specs and contracts, and will perform training sessions, when necessary
Will maintain drawings for all projects, assist in developing standards/ specs, and must be aware of RUS procedures/standards - have sound engineering knowledge of said standards/ practices
Will performs other duties as assigned
Job Requirements:
Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET Accredited school required. Registered Professional Engineer License (KY License preferred).
3 years of related engineering experience is required with the majority of this experience in the area of the desired Skills/ Abilities, preferred.
Power quality knowledge, as well as system protection knowledge - primary experience
Be knowledgeable with T&D Design - and related or similar structures/ facilities
Understand the techniques required to perform power (quality) engineering studies; protective relay application and setting calculations; system fault analysis; and other studies related to system protection
Must be able to design relaying schematics to maintain proper system protection under limited supervision
Comfortable providing technical assistance to partners and other department staff in analyzing power quality problems
Be able to plan - and organize - work for completion of a major project (limited supervision)
Strong communication skills (written/oral) - a must for this roleEstimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
